The Congregation of the Augustinian Missionary Sisters is a branch of the
Augustinian Order, (O.S.A) that looks to St. Augustine as father and teacher and
is guided by his Rule and spirituality.
St Augustine’s spirituality is the first component of our congregational charism
and is common to the whole of the Augustinian family.
Our Congregation was founded in Madrid, Spain, on 6th May 1890, by a
group of three simple women, Augustinian Tertiaries of the Beaterio
(house of pious women) of St. Augustine, in Barcelona: Mothers Querubina Samarra,
Mónica Mujal and Clara Cantó who united a contemplative serenity with
educational service.
Looking back briefly to our origins, in 1883, a group of Augustinian Tertiaries
of the Beaterio in Barcelona, among them Querubina and Mónica, made a
bold commitment in response to a concrete need of the Church. They took on
missions in the Philippine Islands and involved themselves wholeheartedly in the
education and care of young girls orphaned by a cholera epidemic.
We are a Congregation of apostolic life. We profess to follow Christ in
chastity, poverty and obedience, according to the spirituality of St. Augustine
expressed principally in the Rule and in our Constitutions.
In
1890, Querubina, Mónica and Clara, ready to welcome whatever would be asked
of them in mission, left their quiet retreat of the Beaterio and went to
Madrid in order to establish a novitiate with the primary objective of
forming religious women to be sent as missionaries to the Philippines and to
look after the orphans. It was here that the first community of the
Congregation was born. Canonical approbation was received on 6th
May 1890. In addition to their work of formation, the sisters of that
community served in an orphanage of girls located in the same place.
